Located at the foot of Mokattam Mountain, the City of the Dead is an astonishing graveyard turned makeshift city where pantheons, mausoleums and tombs are full of life. There, what would begin centuries ago with the people who worked taking care of the tombs of the nobles, would not stop growing until it became another of Cairo's neighbourhoods, an unusual place where the living and the dead coexist. Some of the inhabitants of the City of the Dead are proud to have the opportunity to share accommodation with the graves of their relatives Like other cemeteries, the City of the Dead is full of art, and around the area you'll find buildings that are home to important characters from Egyptian History as is the case of the imposing mausoleum of the Mohammed Ali family, or the Sultan Sayf al-Din Inal Mosque.

Located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, this busy and colorful open-air bazaar is filled with unique and exotic items from spices and perfumes to jewelry and souvenirs. The spot is home to many old cafes and you won’t know which to try first. There’s El-Fishawi, one of the oldest in Cairo (established in 1797) and one of Naguib Mahfouz’s favorite cafes. Also worth checking out is El-lord where you’ll get to enjoy the songs of Umm Kulthum. As for food, there are plenty of places serving traditional Egyptian food.
